Spotlight on Resident Involvement
THE chief of the new regulator for affordable housing has heard about the innovative work of two Middlesbrough landlords during a special visit.
Peter Marsh, Chief Executive of the newly-formed Tenant Services Authority (TSA), heard about Erimus Housing’s and Tees Valley Housing’s resident involvement success when he travelled to the town.
Erimus Housing was one of the first housing associations to introduce tenant regulation, which means residents have a formal, influential role in assessing and influencing the performance, service delivery, plans and behaviour of the company.
Now Mr Marsh has met with regulators from the organisation to hear about their work, including ensuring that residents’ priorities are recognised within Erimus Housing’s strategies and that performance across the organisation is scrutinised.
Mr Marsh was also shown around Erimus Housing’s Residents’ Resource Centre to see the free facilities on offer to residents, including courses, computers and equipment such as a fax machine and photocopier.
The TSA chief was also welcomed by Housing Advisory Panel members from Tees Valley Housing, Erimus Housing’s partner in Fabrick Housing Group.
Susie Thompson, Group Director of Operations for Fabrick, the parent company of Erimus Housing and Tees Valley Housing, said: “We are committed to involving tenants and using their views and expectations to shape service delivery and we were thrilled to be able to show Mr Marsh our work alongside our residents.
“To be a pioneer in tenant regulation demonstrates that we are putting residents at the heart of decision making. Residents are at the centre of what we do and we also offer a range of ways for residents to get involved at a level they feel comfortable with.”
Erimus Housing also recently piloted a new training system for tenant board members and offers ways to get involved ranging from simply reading the residents’ newsletter to attending area housing forum meetings and becoming focus group members.
The company also recently launched a resident involvement DVD, ‘Dip Your Toe in the Water’, showcasing the range of ways to get involved with Erimus Housing and the benefits for residents.
